A Poem Honoring A Father With Dementia

Celebrate World’s Alzheimer’s Month – Share Your Story

They call me Ernie

I guess that’s my name

I think they’re talking to me

Sorry my mind plays a game

I’m sitting here dying

And I don’t even know

My loved ones praying

They don’t want me to go

The love of my life

Is Darlene my wife

She gives me hugs and kisses

Tells me this is what she misses

My heart has a lot to say

Even if my mouth won’t make a sound

My mind won’t even tell me the day

My mind is foggy, or maybe just a cloud

I am a Marine

My boys, we were a team

We went over seas

Uncle Sam we tried to please

As I pray to God above

My heart is full of love

Know my love for you is the same

Even if I don’t know your name

I’m waiting for GOD to take me

My soul will fly free

Please don’t say sorry

Or give a worry

My brain is gone

But my heart pounds on

I’ll watch over you

Our love still feels brand new

No need to wave goodbye

For one day, I’ll see you

And say hi…..

A Poem On Dementia “TRAM IN NO-WHERE”

TRAM IN NO-WHERE

By Ellina Z., Melbourne

I stepped on to a tram

On Balaclva Road

Under the Railway Bridge

Next to the Fishshop

With all those cut-up fish steaks on display.

I stepped on to a tram

Without a sense of

Why

Or where am I climbing those steps.

Where is my  Bag?

My fingers are empty.

Nothing to clutch to

for security.

Where is my Bag

With all my life in it

to hold on to?

I am standing there on that tram

While it is starting to move.

I look around myself.

I am clothed.

Tram is half empty.

I have no sense

Of  where I am going.

Or how to go back.

And where is back?

On this tram

Nothing to hold on to

Although the seats

And rails are at hand.

I am just standing there

Abandoned by myself.

Traveling in nowhere.
