Love Is All Around Us, Just Waiting For Us To Find It!

Love Is All Around Us,

heart_rocks

Just Waiting For Us To Find It!

Some days as we walk our path into the world of dementia, the road can feel bumpy and hard; not knowing where we are going or how the next moment will roll out.

But during my journey

I have learned one very important lesson.

You find only

what you are willing to see.

heart_in_skyIf we focus on the past and what we feel we have lost, we don’t allow gratitude to enter our life. The pleasure of appreciation for what we did have.

If we focus on the scariness of the future and all the unknowns, we shut down the opportunity to create or allow brilliant moments to occur.

BUT…

When we live in the moment before us RIGHT NOW, we have the power to create and allow into our lives that which we crave… love, engagement, acceptance, comfort, peace… laughter.

heart_sunset_treeI wish for you this Valentines Day that you see and accept the promise of hope and love that surrounds you in every nano second of each day, especially when it it not obvious. I personally know how difficult this can be to do, but I also know it is well worth the effort.

It is our individual choice to decide what we want to focus on. What we want to believe.  What we want to create.  What we want to allow to in our life.  I encourage you to slow down and look at the rocks, the sky, the trees and all that surrounds you. You may be very surprised and the signs of hope and love you see in places you never imagined.

Look For The Signs

They will warm your heart and bring you peace

in the most difficult and loneliest of moments.

May you each have a blessed day wrapped in love knowing you are not alone.

Normal

Normal

By: Michelle Remold

There is question that seems to be following me around the last few weeks and I am asked it almost every day. Most questions I am asked I am able to answer and, if not, I can look around and find the answer. This question however is not one that I am able to answer and there is no right or wrong to the question. The question I have been asked is, “What is normal?” This question wasn’t in reference to Alzheimer’s or dementia, but rather to life in general. By definition, normal is “the usual or typical state or condition.” The problem with normal is that it is different for everyone, especially for those who have Alzheimer’s or dementia and their families.

For a while now, my ‘normal’ has been working, taking classes, and doing homework. While my ‘normal’ differs at times, it is typically fairly consistent day-to-day. My ‘normal’ though is not the normal of my parents or brother. We all have what we consider to be normal and have all established routines to help with keeping things ‘normal’.

We can count on our ‘normal’ changing as we age, but there are some things we just don’t think of as being a part of our ‘normal’ down the road. Alzheimer’s and dementia are something that we don’t usually foresee as being a part of our ‘normal’ at any point in life. Then again, Alzheimer’s and dementia are not a “normal” part of aging.

After a diagnosis of Alzheimer’s or dementia, I think it can be easy to look back and think about how things will never be ‘normal’ again. The thing I think that needs to be looked at though is that a new ‘normal’ will be created. It may not always be made up of butterflies and rainbows, but whose ‘normal’ is like that anyway? What is important is to smile, laugh, cry, and enjoy the moments that matter. Try to embrace the new ‘normal’ as it comes. One day you might look back on it and wonder what you would have done without it.

???????????????????????????????Michelle graduated from the University of Northern Iowa with her Bachelor of Arts in Gerontology: Social Sciences and a minor in Family Studies. She is currently pursuing her Master’s degree in Aging Studies and Nursing Home Administration from Minnesota State University Mankato.

Today I Start Fresh…Coping with Memory Loss

By Lori La Bey

This is a prayer I wrote.  It can easily be changed to accommodate any religion.  Some days dealing with this disease I have to remind myself I am not in control and it is ok.

My Mother Unresponsive

Today I start fresh

I let go of all and let GOD take over

For I am his Sheppard, Let him direct me

Let him guide and protect me on my journey

For it is GOD’s Devine plan, not mine

I am just a tool in the scheme of things

Let me breathe deep and cleanse my soul

Let me see opportunities as they come before me

Let me react to all situations to maximize GOD’s plan

Let me be humble and forgive myself and others

Let me embrace the future and all the possibilities it holds

In his name I pray Amen
