A Tribute to Our Friend and Advocate Paulan Gordon

The above video is in Memory of Paulan Gordon a good friend to many and a global advocate who lived with vascular dementia. Paulan was fearless and progressive in her mission to improve dementia care & support. She helped people understand what stigmas where attached to a diagnosis of dementia and routinely educated people how to recognize and reduce stigmas through inclusion and giving people hope that living well with dementia was possible.

This video was pulled together in collaboration of three organizations which Paulan was actively involved in: Dementia Action Alliance (DAA), Dementia Mentors, and Alzheimer’s Speaks. We thank all of the individuals that shared their love and respect for Paulan Gordon and her advocacy.

In Case I Forget by Norrms Mc Namara

In case I forget when glancing at you,
The one who makes me complete,
Dementia may have won with my mind,
But my heart it will never Defeat,

In case I forget the children we`ve raised,
Or the hundreds of stories I’ve told,
Shed not a tear “For blessed are we,
Who forget one day we are old,

In case I forget to tell you how much,
You’re cherished and treasured each day,
My best friend beside me to brighten the path,
And carry me all of the way,

I may greet you someday, with questioning eyes,
As a stranger with whom I’ve just met,
Still, I love you my darling, with all of my heart,
Please Remember…… In case I forget

Have You Seen My Independence? by Norrms Mc Namara

Have you seen my Independence?
I can’t find it so?
I used to be right here with me,
But now I do not know?

One day there I was,
As confident as can be,
The next always surrounded,
And never only me

Oh, how I long,
To walk the meadows grass,
To sit down on a bench alone,
And watch the seagulls pass

To get my morning paper,
To read along the way,
With nobody else, that’s right, just me!
Oh Lord, for just one day

I love my family dearly,
And they are always there,
But they must get fed up too,
Of sharing all this care,

I was so incredibly Independent
And you all will know,
Have YOU SEEN my independence?
Oh dear, where did it go ??

Thank you for joining Alzheimer’s Speaks Radio.  We hope you subscribe and share this episode with your family, friends, clients and colleagues.

Exploring Lewy Body, Loved Ones and Poetry

Alzheimer’s Speaks Radio – Shifting dementia care from crisis to comfort around the world one episode at a time by raising all voices and delivering sounds news, not just sound bites.

The Radio Show Goes Live – Thursday – Nov, 14th 2019 2pm EST, 1pm CST, 12pm MST, 11am PST & 7pm London and on Nov. 15th at 6am in Australia

Lori La Bey host of Alzheimer’s Speaks Radio talks with poet Su Croll who shares her experience of caring for her Father with Lewy body dementia.  Her prose express the range of emotions when caring for someone with a chronic illness and insights as to the caring journey itself from many angles.  Listen in anytime once the show goes live as all episodes are archived for your convenience.

Hands and Face by Su Croll

It is true. I will remember the hands and face.

The whole frustrating trickery of the thing.

My mother tells how she dogged him

to get all numbers limned at their true points.

Noon and midnight made for due north.

Six headed south. The clock becoming

a demented compass, a supposed proof

fumbled for in that doctor’s office

right before my dad was officially diagnosed.

I don’t know where his attempted drawings

of clocks are today. I don’t know how

that suddenly uncertain face triggered

his ragged response. Three and nine left off

or the hands wayward and drawn in the blank

outside the clock. I don’t know why that wrong

clock condemned him, tripped him up, making

that day the day they told us with all certainty

it was dementia.
