Grief, Gratitude, and Passion to Improve Care

Today was a hectic day. I had every intention of this post going live this morning, but I’m glad I’m getting this posted before midnight! Below will shine a light as to why and also why February 28th is such a precious day to me on so many levels.

The First is Grief

Grief, because this is the anniversary of my mother’s death. Nine years ago, today she passed away after living her last 30 years with dementia.  In fact, upon her autopsy, we found out mom hit the trifecta. Not only did she have Alzheimer’s disease, but she had Lewy Body and Parkinson’s disease.  Through my caring journey for my mother, she taught me so many beautiful life lessons.  Mom, I truly miss you every single day.

The Second is Gratitude

Gratitude, for many reasons, but I will limit it to three today.
1) The opportunity I was given to care, for not only my mother living with dementia but my father with brain cancer. Giving back to them was a gift to me, and the life lessons they taught me along the way made me a better person.  I will be forever grateful.

2) Recently, I became a grandma again. This time to Saylor Rose who melts my heart as I watch my daughter and her family expand and how each of them cares for and loves this beautiful little human being.  I will love them all forever to the moon and back.

3) Last, my keynote speech Betty the Bald Chicken – Lessons in How to Care, which I have done for years is now available in book form.  This story came to me in a dream and all I saw and heard was the word Alzheimer’s and a picture of a bald chicken.  One night at 2am I woke up from a dream. It was relentless. It played over and over again in my head. Below illustrates what my dream.

Being older when I had this dream, I knew I would not go back to sleep until I got up and wrote the story that was being given to me. Since then, I’ve been telling Betty the Bald Chicken’s story for years.  Audience members always asked for it to be in book form, but I never got around to it.  To me, the timing is perfect now, as Betty the Bald Chicken isn’t just about dementia, but anytime a person feels they don’t fit in.  It might be someone being bullied, a person going through a divorce, a death of a loved one, various chronic illnesses that we must adjust to, or downright discrimination in all its forms.

Betty teaches us hope and resilience. She shines a light on the impact we have on others and what we can do to make our home, school, work, community, and the world a better place to live.

There are questions toward the back of the book to help all ages open up about their feelings. They can look at how they are treated by others and how they themselves treat other people and the impact that has on everyone.

I hope you will join me in creating a safe space for difficult conversations about our feelings and overall mental health.  This book is ideal for families, schools, libraries, therapists, and workplaces.

Here is a sneak peek at Betty the Bald Chicken

The Third is Passion

Passion for life.  Passion for the people in my life.  Passion to make the world a better place.  Looking back on my life, I have no question my life like others is part of a master plan.  One which puts obstacles on our path to challenge us. To see how we will react. Will we succumb to difficult times, or will we adapt, learn, and challenge circumstances finding new ways to cope with our situations?

In a very strange way, I find myself lucky to have had someone I love so deeply have dementia.  Although I would not wish the disease on my worst enemy, I have found that loving deeply also allows us to fight fearlessly. To look for and create new ways to support those we love.  To help others and give hope so often missing for those living with or alongside dementia.

Fresh eyes, of those living in the trenches, often see things differently from organizations, bureaucratic, and government agencies.  As difficult as a journey can be, knowing you are helping others ease their burden and remove their isolation is satisfying.  It gives purpose to tough situations.

I am thankful for my experience which turned into a life role that allows me to be driven by passion.  This allows me to have a job that doesn’t feel like work and helps others worldwide. To me, that is a huge blessing.

Her new single “Last Dance in the Rain” launched February10th, 2023, which was an independently produced album and is available on all major streaming platforms. The Indie Pop single “Last Dance in the Rain” has thought provoking lyrics, about the loss of someone due to symptoms that effect memory. This is a very heartfelt song, evoking intense emotions for people affected by dementia, as well as the friends and family around them, who see the changes in personality due to the illness. It tells the story of the loss of the mind before the body and the hope that although they are not with us in mind the hope that they are happy, dancing in the rain.

Lyrics

Last Dance in the Rain

Keep me awake

Pray my soul the lord to take

I can almost feel the breeze

Blowing gently through the leaves

Those stubborn trees they never bend

The broken boughs they never mend

She don’t remember any more

Just a part of growing old

Don’t remember or recall

A saddened face did long since fall

Sometimes they come but she’s not there

In merely playgrounds deep within a stare

Does she remember if we laughed or cried

I feel all that has left her mind

Maybe she’s dancing in the rain

She don’t remember any more

Just a part of growing old

Don’t remember or recall

A saddened face did long since fall

Don’t remember any more

Just a part of growing old

Don’t remember or recall

A saddened face did long since fall

Send me to sleep

Pray my soul to take

It never rains outside she said

Now she’s ‘neath the flowerbeds

Silently they close the door

Watch the rain come down

It pours

Laurie Scherrer was diagnosed with Early Onset Alzheimer’s & FTD at the age of 55 and was able to continue a professional career so she turned her focus towards helping others through their dementia journey. Enhanced Reading Option For Those Living With Dementia Who Still Love To Read

Kirk House Publishers is proud to present the Reminisce Line of Dementia-Friendly Books.

Listen to the Audio Interview Above

OR

Watch the Video Interview Below

Alzheimer’s Speaks Radio host, Lori La Bey talks with Ann Aubitz the Co-owner and Publisher of Kirk House Publishers and Fuzion Press, located in Burnsville, Minnesota. Ann is proud to present the Reminisce Line of reader-friendly books. La Bey can’t wait to share this new line of books that fills a huge hole for those living with dementia and also many elder avid readers whose find the typical offerings either too difficult or too easy to read.

About the New Line of books

Kirk House Publishers is proud to present The Reminisce Line of reader-friendly books. Written by Kirk House authors, the stories are set in the 1940s, 1950s, and 1960s in an easy-to-read, short-story format. Large type and full-colored illustrations make the stories accessible to all readers, many of whom may have their own special memories of those periods of history.
Reminisce books by Kirk House Publishers is a line of dementia-friendly books written by amazing authors. Each book is printed in large type on white stock for easy reading. The words “large print” will appear on the book but never the words Dementia or Alzheimer’s. Each of the books in the series will include ten stories of 1500 to 3000 words written by some of the best authors in their genre. Images are placed throughout the book along with several full-color pages. These books are conversational and easy to follow, for those who love reading as much as we do.

Here’s What Our Founder Had To Say About The Reminisce Books Series

“When Ann Aubitz from Kirk House Publishers called me about the new line of books she was publishing for older readers, my ears perked up. I knew this was an underserved market. Ann explained her series would be different from the books currently available.

Her books were actually inspired by an elder, her 96-year-old mother, who still enjoys reading. I was excited to review the books myself, as so often books for our elders have small print, they are hard to hold, or have storylines that are too complicated to comprehend, or on the other side, they are overly simplified and child-like.

What I found was Ann’s books (the Reminisce book line) were designed to be dignified and intriguing. In addition, they would meet multiple needs: Large print for older eyes. The Larger-sized book makes it easier to hold as it is common for fine motor skills to decline as we age. Intriguing storylines for all ages. This allows flexibility to share intergenerationally, allowing grandma or grandpa to read to their grandchildren, or their grandkids can read the book to their grandparents; if they are in the mood to share. Along the lines of intergenerational, the books also can teach children a bit about the past and engage in conversation about the good old days that elders refer to.

These books are ideal for a wide range of people and abilities of various ages, and for those with early cognition issues, they are IDEAL! The stories are set in the 1940s, 1950s, and 1960s in an easy-to-read, short story format in the genres we love, mystery, romance, ghost stories, and science fiction. Large type and full colored illustrations make the stories accessible to all readers, many of whom may have their own special memories of those periods of history. This series will meet a wide range of needs, enabling many people who love to read to continue having that pleasure. I highly recommend the Reminisce book line for your special someone that still loves to read.”

A BIG THANK YOU to Dr. Lakelyn Hogan Eichenberger with Home Instead who invited me on her live video chat to discuss early diagnosis and why it’s so important. So many people worry about changes in cognition from individuals who are sensing a change in their own lives, to family and friends. This chat will give you some ideas of common changes people question, what could be causing the changes, who to go see if you are concerned, to how to approach the conversation with a loved one, and even how to respond to someone who is telling you they are worried about cognitive changes.
