Quality of Life in Memory Care. What Does “Good” Look Like? Part 2 of 4

Listen Live or Listen at Your Convenience Thursday – April 20th, 2023 – 2pm EST, 1pm CST, 12pm MST, 11am PST & 7pm London GMT, 9pm South Africa SAST, and on the April 21st at 6am in Australia AEDT

Watch the Video Interview Below

80th Street Residence and Seni

Our Host, Lori La Bey is joined by Lindsey Harbison, with the 80th Street Residence, and Deanna Vigliotta and Laurie Gredlein with Seni as they discuss what ā€œquality of life and good careā€ actually looks like in a Memory Care setting. All three of these ladies have phenomenal experience in healthcare, so we know this episode will be loaded with nuggets!

Lindsey Harbison, Assistant Executive Director of the 80th Street Residence, is often the first person that many families meet upon their introduction to the 80th Street Residence. With 16 years at the community, she has helped hundreds of families navigate the difficult process of making the move from one’s home to The 80th Street Residence.

Laurie Gredlein has been working in the healthcare/senior living field for over 20yrs – from marketing for a large pharmaceutical company to working in various long-term care settings.  She is currently an Account Executive for Seni in the Northeast region and resides in New Jersey.  She is passionate about educating people on the importance of using high-quality incontinence products, as well as helping those in need.

Deanna Vigliottahas an extensive 30-year healthcare sales and sales management background.  She spent many years of her career working in the Radiology Imaging space, where she built relationships with healthcare professionals, and provided related healthcare products & ancillary services.

Deanna joined the Seni sales team to better educate consumers, geriatricians, neurologists, Skilled Nursing Facilities – SNF, Assisted Living Facilities – ALF, Home Health Care, and Memory Care communities about the importance of choosing high-performing adult incontinence products to improve the quality of life for incontinent people as well as those that care for them.   In doing so she moved quickly into the role of National Sales Manager with Seni, supporting her teammates and Seni’s clients, to shift the mindset in the USA from adult incontinence products being viewed as a disposable commodity to high-performing incontinence products being viewed as a critical component of the continuum of care.

Reframing Valentine’s Day

So Often We Feel Sad On Valentine’s Day

If We Don’t Have a Current Love In Our Life

My Challenge Is To Reframe Expectations For You Valentine’s Day.

Have It Represent All Of Your Life, Not Just One Day!

Many people are experiencing loss of a loved one. That might be an actual passing or so often someone we love has left our life for one reason or another. It might be a breakup. One that was chosen by one person and not understood by the other, and sometimes not accepted as final either. Sometime there is a mutually agreement to part ways.

In the case of illness, it may be an outcome that no one chose. It may be just a matter of circumstances. Tough, uncomfortable circumstances.

No matter what your situation is, there is always something to be grateful for. Those individuals who have found their soul mate, which most of us long for; instead of being sad or jealous, I suggest you celebrate their brilliance. Their example which can give us hope of the possibility of things to come.

For those who feel alone, I challenge you to embrace the moments of your past, when you have felt loved by another. When your face lit upon just thinking about them, let alone being with them. The moments you felt safe, happy, and accepted for who you are even in your rawest of forms. The moment you felt a deep love for someone, and you felt that love returned to you. Maybe it was a pet, a location, or a situation that filled your soul.

If you your loved has dementia, you may feel a loss for the way things were. I challenge you to embrace to gifts of what remains. Just because there are things you can’t do a certain way anymore, doesn’t mean those things can’t be modified to still create joyful moments that touch both your souls. Sometimes sitting quietly holding someone’s hand is the most peaceful place to be, or seeing that beautiful smile, glint in a eye, soft giggle, or the drop of a joyful tear.

We have all had those moments were love in many forms has made us feel whole. Made us feel like we truly belong in this world. Made us feel like we matter and gives us purpose to love others more.

Don’t Buy Into The Commercialization Valentine’s Day Is Only About

Romantic Love

It is about many forms of love. Love for family members, a parent, a child, a sibling, or extended or stepfamily members. We can celebrate love for friends, colleagues, teachers, mentors, neighbors and even strangers that have made an impact on our lives. And please don’t forget about Self Love. So many times, we disregard the importance of loving ourselves and how that gift lets us love others more deeply.

Spread love and kindness throughout the world by sharing your loving thoughts with others. Turn off the news that all too often highlights the ugliness of our world and make someone else’s day.

So, this Valentine’s Day Remember & Embrace All The Loving Moments

You’ve Been Lucky Enough To Experience In Your Life.

I am filled with appreciation and love to our community members.

May you all have a blessed and full day filled with all the loving moments you have been lucky enough to experience.

Song: Halfway to Heaven

ā€œHalfway to Heavenā€Ā is a song written for Joyce Ann Barczyk by her husband John Barczyk. There are a lot of songs about Alzheimer’s disease, but John felt there was something missing in all of them – hope. John’s goal was to frame the long hard struggle as a journey with many identifiable steps along the way, and help sufferers and their families find comfort in each successive crisis. When the song was shared with Kaitlin Ridgeway, a board-certified music therapist with Hospice of Michigan, she sang it to Joyce and then to other patients. Kaitlin commented, ā€œI have played that song for other patients and families and every time they find such an emotional connection to the words.ā€

Kaitlin recorded ā€œHalfway to Heavenā€ on her phone and sent it to John. John added an introduction he recorded on his phone and some images. That is what you will hear and see in the video above.

Joyce was a wonderful wife to John for over 50 years, a mother to four great kids, and an RN for whom no sacrifice was too great. She had a ready smile that never dimmed and faced her diagnosis with courage and determination. Joyce will be remembered for the comfort and joy she lovingly displayed to others. As a nurse, a friend, a mom, and a grandmother, she was always willing to offer help and support.

Joyce Ann Barczyk, of Lakeville, Michigan, passed peacefully on July 14, 2022 after a long, hard battle with early onset Alzheimer disease.
