A Tribute to Our Friend and Advocate Paulan Gordon

The above video is in Memory of Paulan Gordon a good friend to many and a global advocate who lived with vascular dementia. Paulan was fearless and progressive in her mission to improve dementia care & support. She helped people understand what stigmas where attached to a diagnosis of dementia and routinely educated people how to recognize and reduce stigmas through inclusion and giving people hope that living well with dementia was possible.

This video was pulled together in collaboration of three organizations which Paulan was actively involved in: Dementia Action Alliance (DAA), Dementia Mentors, and Alzheimer’s Speaks. We thank all of the individuals that shared their love and respect for Paulan Gordon and her advocacy.

ARTS & DEMENTIA EDUCATIONAL PANEL:

After receiving multiple requests to formally continue to highlight the artwork of those living with dementia, The Arts & Dementia Educational Panel will formally launch this November. All levels of artists and all types of art are welcome. Our goal is to elevate panelists work and ability to create beauty in many forms. They will share examples of various types of art they participate in, how, and why they started, what they have learned, and what they personally get out of making art. Panelists, do not have to attend all sessions.

Anyone living with dementia interested in participating, please reach out to Lori La Bey via email, or Private message her on FaceBook

Below is an Example of What the ARTS & DEMENTIA PANEL Will Explore & Share

As you will see from the sample video above, conversations are comfortable, casual, and fascinating. We have so much to learn from one another. All recordings will be prerecorded and published to Alzheimer’s Speaks YouTube channel with a specific playlist channel for easy access. Each episode will be pushed out on Alzheimer’s Speaks social media channels as well.

Anyone living with dementia interested in participating in the ARTS & DEMENTIA EDUCATIONAL PANEL please reach out to:

How a Person is Affected by a Change in Their Dementia Diagnosis

Today Lori La Bey, founder of Dementia Chats and Alzheimer’s Speaks facilitates a conversation with the true experts, those living with a diagnosis of dementia. Lori has always understood the importance of listening to those living with an illness and she wants to share their voices with you.

Our topic is about what happens to the person living with a form of dementia when they are told their diagnosis has changed. Hear from four people living with dementia and their insights as to what all changes in their world when this happens. A huge “Thank You” to Harry Urban, Karen Creekmoore, Truthful Loving Kindness, and Anne Miller for their willingness to share their insights and experiences.

Dementia Chats™ was created with the intention to educate people living with dementia; their care partners both family and friends as well as professionals and advocates.  Our Experts are those diagnosed with dementia. We have been doing this series since July of 2012, but given we changed platforms in 2016, only those videos from 2016 were preserved.

In Case I Forget by Norrms Mc Namara

In case I forget when glancing at you,
The one who makes me complete,
Dementia may have won with my mind,
But my heart it will never Defeat,

In case I forget the children we`ve raised,
Or the hundreds of stories I’ve told,
Shed not a tear “For blessed are we,
Who forget one day we are old,

In case I forget to tell you how much,
You’re cherished and treasured each day,
My best friend beside me to brighten the path,
And carry me all of the way,

I may greet you someday, with questioning eyes,
As a stranger with whom I’ve just met,
Still, I love you my darling, with all of my heart,
Please Remember…… In case I forget

Have You Seen My Independence? by Norrms Mc Namara

Have you seen my Independence?
I can’t find it so?
I used to be right here with me,
But now I do not know?

One day there I was,
As confident as can be,
The next always surrounded,
And never only me

Oh, how I long,
To walk the meadows grass,
To sit down on a bench alone,
And watch the seagulls pass

To get my morning paper,
To read along the way,
With nobody else, that’s right, just me!
Oh Lord, for just one day

I love my family dearly,
And they are always there,
But they must get fed up too,
Of sharing all this care,

I was so incredibly Independent
And you all will know,
Have YOU SEEN my independence?
Oh dear, where did it go ??

Thank you for joining Alzheimer’s Speaks Radio.  We hope you subscribe and share this episode with your family, friends, clients and colleagues.
