The Gift of Philanthropy and the Power of Change it’s Making in Society Our Host, Lori La Bey talks with the key members of the Richard and Maude Ferry Foundation which is a family foundation deeply rooted in the Catholic tradition, promoting dignity and quality of human life. We will be focusing on three separate organizations focusing on dementia care within the foundation.

Joining Us: Richard Ferry, Quentin Orem, Marilyn Raichle, and Marigrace Becker.

Richard and Maude Ferry were one of many couples who have lived what is often called the “American Dream”. They have walked a blessed and rewarding journey together, from their beginnings in a small, Midwestern college town, to community leaders in Los Angeles and entrepreneurs in a global business. Richard is the Chairman of the Richard and Maude Ferry Foundation. He co-founded Korn Ferry International in 1969, and for more than three decades was instrumental in establishing the firm as the world’s premier provider of executive human capital solutions.

Quentin Orem, Executive Director at the Ferry Foundation which supports various causes like Maude’s Awards, Maude’s Ventures, and the Memory Hub to name a few. Quentin is a partner with Social Venture Partners which is a philanthropic organization. Quentin is also on the Board of Directors for Cristo Rey Seattle and Advisory Board Member at SCU Ignatian Center for Jesuit Education.

Marilyn Raichle, Executive Director of Maudes’ Awards. She became a care partner for her parents, both of whom were developing Alzheimer’s Disease. In 2015, inspired by her mother’s newfound artistic ability, she founded The Art of Alzheimer’s, celebrating the creativity of persons living with dementia and the power of the creative arts to enrich and empower their lives.

Marigrace Becker is the Program Manager of Community Education and Impact at the UW Memory and Brain Wellness Center (MBWC) and the Director of the Memory Hub, a new community center operated by MBWC that offers supportive, educational, and social programs for people with memory loss and their families.

Maude’s Awards mission is to enrich the quality of life for persons living with Alzheimer’s disease and related dementias and their care partners—celebrating and inspiring innovative practices of care and sharing these practices with the wider dementia care community. Individuals can win $5,000 and organizations $25,000.

Applications for Maude’s Awards 2023 Close May 16th

Maude’s Venture’s mission is to invest in people who want to build new ways to meet the needs of the dementia community. They are passionate about investing in people who are innovating care for individuals with memory loss. Their goal is to advance care for those living with Alzheimer’s while we wait for a cure. Every year they offer seed funding of $50,000 – $100,000 for individuals, nonprofits, and for-profits to help them develop new ideas to improve the lives of caregivers and people living with dementia.

Applications for Maude’s Ventures 2023 Close July 14th

The Memory Hub is a Place for Dementia-Friendly Community, Collaboration, and Impact! They bring people, programs, and partners together. The Memory Hub operates as a vibrant dementia-specific community center, collaborative workspace, and training center. It is spearheaded by the UW Memory and Brain Wellness Center (MBWC) and located on the campus of founding partner the Frye Art Museum. Pioneers Improving Dementia Care – Koelsch Communities & Innovation Lab

Listen Live or Listen at Your Convenience Tuesday – November 8th, 2022 – 2pm EST, 1pm CST, 12pm MST, 11am PST & 7pm London GMT, 9pm South Africa SAST, and on the 9th at 6am in Australia AEDT

We are live today so call in and join the conversation! (323) 870-4602

Our Host, Lori La Bey talks with Benjamin Surmi the Director of Education and Culture at Koelsch Communities, which is a third-generation family business that operates specialized memory care, assisted and independent living communities across eight states.  They are located in  Arizona, California, Colorado, Idaho, Illinois, Montana, Texas and Washington.

Koelsch’s Innovation Lab pioneers best-practice techniques and technologies from around the world, all seeking a higher quality of life and better health outcomes for seniors. The Innovation Lab includes emerging technologies such:

o   A new audio headset that leapfrogs the long-standing problems of hearing aids (a huge problem for those living with memory issues);

o   A “de-digitizing” technology that enables seniors to enjoy family photos without the confusion of electronic devices;

o   An AI tool mimicking the voices of family members;

o   And various innovative brain health and communications techniques that have led to extraordinary memory and senior care breakthroughs.

Developed in France and largely unknown in the U.S., “Humanitude” is a special set of techniques for treating those living with memory issues – and it has demonstrated an ability to significantly improve quality of life. As a pioneer of the “Humanitude” practices, Benjamin is an impassioned advocate of these simple, principled, compassionate practices that anyone can use. His stories of Koelsch’s pilot innovation projects are uplifting and encouraging, especially to individual caregivers and those concerned about eventually living with dementia and other memory challenges.
