Filling The Gap For Children Who Have Parents With Young Onset Dementia.

Our host, Lori La Bey will be talking with Diana Shulla Cose the Founding Executive Director, of Lorenzo’s House, and Bree Ruge the Lead of Programs & Development at Lorenzo’s House. Also joining us are three young adults who are involved with Lorenzo’s House – William Dean, Shylah Thiara, and Jessica.

Diana Shulla Cose is the Founding Executive Director, of Lorenzo’s House. Diana has been the primary care partner to her husband and mother. She is a true visionary, entrepreneur, strategist, innovator, and proven fundraiser. After her husband was diagnosed with Younger-Onset Alzheimer’s she recognized a massive care and connection gap for younger families and in 2021 founded Lorenzo’s House, a non-profit social impact startup designed to empower families everywhere living with Younger-Onset dementia.

Diana leveraged her past career of over 25 years as Co-Founder & President of a network of public schools in Chicago, scaling from 40 students and 2 teachers to 2,300 students and over 250 staff across 5 schools – Diana brings deep experience and insight to her new venture in this new space.

Bree Ruge, Certified Dementia Practitioner, is a certified Dementia Friend by Dementia Friendly America, and the Lead of Programs & Development at Lorenzo’s House. She has the privilege of building programs and relationships with youth and care partners daily. Bree has been personally touched by Alzheimer’s in her family which gave her knowledge and insights to walk alongside families living with Younger-Onset dementia. Bree was a co-creator, developing the Dementia Friendly Initiative in 4 neighborhoods in the Northside of Chicago.

William Dean, who goes by Will, is 23 years old and is from Wales in the United Kingdom. Will’s mother lives with young onset dementia, and this challenge has inspired him to become an advocate for change through fundraising and raising awareness.

Shylah Thiara’s father was diagnosed with Younger-Onset Alzheimer’s in his mid-50s, and since then she became an advocate and blogger. Shylah spreads awareness and tackles the misconceptions associated with Younger-Onset Alzheimer’s disease by sharing her journey of navigating her father’s diagnosis.

Jessica Christensen is a 13-year-old from Utah.  Diana described Jessica as a bright ray of light for this world who has thoughtful perspectives and inspires many, wise beyond her years, and is a youth leader at Lorenzo’s House. Jessica’s father was diagnosed with young-onset Alzheimer’s disease and she has been with Lorenzo’s House for about a year and a half and is a youth leader at Lorenzo’s House.

Our Host, Lori La Bey talks with Jay Allen.  Jay is known for his appearance on The Voice and for his song about dementia that went viral, “Blank Stares.” The song was written to honor his mother who passed from Alzheimer’s. The song went viral, reaching over 500 million views on Facebook, and showcased Jay’s talent and dedication to raising awareness for the Alzheimer’s Association. As a result of his advocacy efforts, he has been involved with several international events, including the Rita Hayworth Gala, which has raised over $100 million for the Alzheimer’s Association and has received numerous accolades, including The Caregiver Award from the National Alzheimer’s Association.

Jay is set to hit country radio with new music in 2023. He is also friends with our good friend Kevin Dill, who was recently on Alzheimer’s Speaks Radio talking about his life, and the symptoms he deals with, living with Lewy Body Dementia.

Lyrics For The Song – “No Prayer Like Mama’s”

Writers: Jay Allen, Justin Morgan – Producer: Justin Morgan – Mixer: Micah Wilshire

Ain’t no prayer like mamas

When it’s your turn up to bat

And she knows it’s only little league

But she knows you want it bad

And when you get a little older

And you’re out a little late

She’ll bend God’s ear all night long

Til you get back home safe

XXXX

All those hallelujah amens

And cryin on her knees

Sayin grace at dinner time

And telling’ God her dreams

She’s an angel she’s a saint

I’m telling y’all there ain’t

No prayer like mama’s

XXXX

Ain’t no prayer like mamas

When it’s a prayer for the girl

That’ll make her baby happy

That’s gonna be his whole world

She’ll know the Lord was listening

Cause she can’t help but smile

When she sees that answered prayer

Walking down the aisle

XXXX

All those hallelujah amens

And cryin on her knees

Sayin grace at dinner time

And telling’ God her dreams

She’s an angel she’s a saint

I’m telling y’all there ain’t

No prayer like mama’s

XXXX

Ain’t no prayer like mamas

When she walks the streets of gold

Still praying for her babies

Kneeling at His throne

I know she’s lookin’ down

And I know she’s all healed now

Bet she’s singing out amazing grace

And oh how sweet the sound

XXXX

Of those hallelujah amens

And cryin on her knees

Sayin grace at dinner time

And telling’ God her dreams

She’s an angel she’s a saint

I’m telling y’all there ain’t

No prayer like mama’s

XXXX

Now she’s watching over us

I’m telling y’all there’s just

No prayer like mama’s

An Amazing Conversation with Naomi Feil – A Pioneer in Healthcare

Listen Live or Listen at Your Convenience Tuesday – Jan 3rd, 2023 – 2pm EST, 1pm CST, 12pm MST, 11am PST & 7pm London GMT, 9pm South Africa SAST, and on the 4th at 6am in Australia AEDT

Today, Eilon Caspi will be cohosting with Lori La Bey as they interview the one and only Naomi Feil. Joining us will also be Naomi’s daughter Vicki de Klerk.

A little background on Naomi Feil:

Naomi Feil is the developer of the Validation Method. She was born in 1932 in Munich Germany, graduated from Columbia University with a Masters degree in Social Work. Naomi developed the Validation method between 1963 and 1980, through practice, as a response to her dissatisfaction with traditional methods of working with the severely disoriented old. The older population was her client base.

In 1982, she published her first book, Validation: The Feil Method. Her second book, The Validation Breakthrough, was first published in 1993. Naomi and her husband Ed, have made many films and videos about aging and Validation. Since the mid-1970s, Naomi has done over 1000 workshops in the United States and Canada, plus almost 1000 workshops in Europe and Asia.

She can easily be called, the God-mother of ‘person-centered’ care.

Vicki de Klerk-Rubin is Naomi’s daughter and since 2014, she has taken on the role of Executive Director of the Validation Training Institute. She is a Dutch-trained, Registered Nurse, holds an MBA from Fordham University and is a certified Validation Master.
