Addresses Real Life Stigmas Associated With Dementia
At Upcoming ARPF Meeting
The Alzheimer’s Research & Prevention Foundation (ARPF) today announced that Lori La Bey, the chief executive of Alzheimer’s Speaks, will be the featured presenter on February 27 at the ARPF- sponsored workshop in Scottsdale, in association with Affordable Home Care. Alzheimer’s Speaks provides information and social media communities for those coping with Alzheimer’s disease and other forms of dementia.
La Bey’s presentation, entitled The Power of Simplicity; Explore the Myths & Magic of Disease, will look at what you can do to understand the world in which a person with dementia lives.
There are five objectives for La Bey’s presentation:
- Get new insight into an old problem;
- Learn to identify stress triggers when interacting with a person who has dementia;
- Get empowered to change your personal care culture;
- Walk out with new tools that are simple to implement and share with others;
- Discuss resources available for professionals and the public.
The ARPF and Alzheimer’s Speaks also announced a global partnership to raise awareness about Alzheimer’s and other forms of dementia. Together the organizations will provide caregivers with education and tools that will enable them to take care of loved ones.
“The Alzheimer’s Research and Prevention Foundation (ARPF) is honored to collaborate with Alzheimer’s Speaks to improve our Dementia Care Culture and empower all caregivers and people at risk of developing dementia to lead a healthier lifestyle, which can help prevent Alzheimer’s disease,” said Dharma Singh Khalsa, M.D. President and Medical Director, Alzheimer’s Research and Prevention Foundation.
“If you are like millions of Americans and others around the world, your top health priority is ‘staying mentally sharp as I age.’ ARPF has been working on prevention for 21 years through education and research on lifestyle-based interventions. It’s going to take all of us working together to defeat this multi-faceted disease and we are delighted to join forces with other organizations that have a similar mission.”
La Bey has been working tirelessly for years to destigmatize Alzheimer’s and dementia. “They say that it takes a village to raise a child,” says La Bey. “It also takes a village to take care of those who have Alzheimer’s and other forms of dementia. In my presentation, I’ll give the attendees concrete advice on how to take care of loved ones suffering from dementia. We’ll talk about taking care of the person and we’ll also discuss how to take care of yourself because that’s equally important.”
