Fascinating Concept -

Living with Dementia and Enjoy Train Ride

Today I spoke with Henri Snel who lives in the Netherlands and specializes in developing living spaces to meet the needs of those with dementia.  Henri has been personally touched by the disease through his own family.  He now teaches students the importance of getting involved and making a difference through architectural design. Here is a summary of the video I grabbed from Henri’s website the Alzheimer’s Architecture. What a lovely concept to empower and relax those with dementia!  I promise I will have Henri on Alzheimer’s Speaks Radio so he can share his vision and passion with us.  We are just figuring out dates and times now so get your questions ready!

Doing nothing in the train compartment – Residents of the closed PG department of nursing home the Bieslandhof in Delft have their own train compartment. Sit in your chair, with a cup of tea, and enjoy the passing Dutch polder landscape. Virtual true, because the train compartment is in the nursing and long linear landscape is a video recording. The train is made by the artist Lino Hellings and Yvonne Dröge Wendel commissioned and with financial support from Foundation Art and Public Space (SKOR).

All though you may not be able to understand the language describing this video you will get the power of the pictures captured.

Here is another interesting concept, for riding a bike although I personally would pick a nice bike path verse a road for the virtual ride. Very interesting to say the least!

Music Therapy –

Engage and Enjoy Those With Dementia

wedny_music_therapyToday’s guest is Wendy Krueger, who  has been a Board Certified Music Therapist for nearly seven years. She graduated from Berklee College of Music with a Bachelor’s degree in Music Therapy in 2006, and currently works at developing new Music Therapy programs in Northeastern Massachusetts through her business, Up Beat Music Therapy.

Wendy directs a Music Therapy Internship program and supervises undergraduate students who are beginning placements in a Dementia-care setting.  Out of the many facilities she contracts with, Wendy works most with (and finds her passion most from) clients suffering from Alzheimer’s Disease and other forms of dementia.

Studies have found that music is an incredibly powerful tool in the treatment and prevention of dementia-related behaviors and alleviates symptoms of the disease in many ways. As the population of people with dementia grows, Wendy is fortunate enough to have found her niche working with individuals so in need, and so often forgotten about.

We had a wonderful conversation, received great tips on how to use music as magic with those struggling with Dementia and had some great interaction from our audience members.  I hope you enjoy the show!

Dr. Allen Powers Speaks Out

On Anti-psychotics

Today on Alzheimer’s Speaks Radio, Dr. Power shared his insights on Dementia Beyond Drugs, which was a fascinating conversation.  One which I’ve heard from several people with Dementia how wonderful it was to hear a professional that really seems to understand the disease and the needs of those diagnosed with memory loss.

He also just posted this this article on his blog about a new study from the Journal of Clinical Psychiatry raises some new questions.   The study looked at the 4 commonly-used atypical antipsychotics in 332 people for up to 2 years. They found

(1) lack of significant improvement,

(2) a high discontinuation rate, and

(3) high rates of both serious and minor adverse events for all four drugs.
