Dementia: What You Need to

Make Person Centered Care Real

Debbie Richman with the Minnesota-North Dakota Alzheimer’s Association was our guest today. She has a great background and a wonderful attitude on how to live well with dementia, not as the disease.  I heard Debbie speak for the first time about two months ago and was so impressed with her insights and ability to communicate simple techniques which bring respect, dignity and a sense of calm when dealing with Dementia I just had to have her on the show.

Here are just some of things we will be discussing:

1. What needs to happen for care to be truly “person centered”?

2. What are the barriers to person centered care?

3. What can family/friends do to facilitate a more person centered environment for their loved ones?

4. How does a person centered focus help to improve communication and lessen challenging behaviors?

5. How do I engage or assist others to engage the person with dementia?

Two Memory Café Events –

Alzheimer’s Patients & Caregivers – Roseville Minnesota

Saint Paul, Minn., July 09, 2011 – AlzheimersSpeaks.com, a leading provider of education and support for Alzheimer’s patients and their caregivers, ACR Healthcare Group, The Alzheimer’s Research Center, The Minnesota Memory Project, and The Center for Dementia and Alzheimer’s Care of Health Partners, today jointly announced the opening of the United States’ first “Memory Café.” The Café will give Alzheimer’s patients and their personal caregivers the opportunity to meet and provide mutual social support to one another.  To launch the Café, the group has arranged two open houses for the public which are free of charge.

Lori La Bey, founder of AlzheimersSpeaks.com, has dealt with memory loss through her mother’s thirty year journey with dementia.  “When my mother was first diagnosed with memory loss years ago it was nearly impossible for me to find information about the disease or caregiving.  We need to create community through unity and give care to those dealing with Alzheimer’s.  We need to do it now because there is no time to wait for a cure.   The numbers are rising and the needs of patients and caregivers are sky rocketing.”
